INTRODUCTION

I saw an article in Medical Tribune about the successful transplantation of a mammalian nucleus into a plant cell. Naturally, having a science fiction turn of mind, I foresaw all sorts of possibilities. I put the idea to use immediately, creating photosynthetic cattle for my third novel, An Enemy of the State, and making it the central idea for this piece. I promised Stan Schmidt a series of stories in this future scenario, but I haven't got around to writing them yet.

I probably never will. So "Green Winter" the first and last installment.

This version, by the way, differs from the one Stan bought for Analog. I had two endings. This is the other one.
